Improve Weld and Connection Inspection with the Hioki RM3545A

As electric mobility, battery systems, and high-current power applications continue to expand, manufacturers are placing greater emphasis on connection quality. Even very small amounts of resistance in welded joints, busbars, and power cable connections can affect energy efficiency, heat generation, and overall product safety. The Hioki Resistance Meter RM3545A is designed to help manufacturers and engineers measure these small resistance values with high precision, making it well suited for both development work and high-speed production line inspection. Hioki positions the RM3545A as a solution for testing every weld or connection on a production line and for quantitatively managing connection quality.

One of the RM3545A’s most important advantages is its precision at extremely low resistance levels. Hioki specifies 0.045% basic accuracy, 1 nΩ resolution, and a measurement range from 1 nΩ to 1200 MΩ, with up to 1 A test current in the low-resistance ranges. This allows users to distinguish small resistance differences that can indicate whether a weld or joint is acceptable or defective. Hioki notes that typical weld resistance can fall in the 10 μΩ to 100 μΩ range, making high-resolution testing especially valuable for reliable pass/fail judgment and traceability in manufacturing.

The RM3545A also includes functions to improve measurement stability and repeatability. Hioki highlights its Offset Voltage Compensation (OVC) function, which helps correct the effects of thermoelectric voltage generated when different metals come into contact. The instrument also supports temperature correction, temperature measurement, and temperature conversion (ΔT) functions, helping users account for the fact that resistance varies with temperature. With the included temperature sensor, the RM3545A can perform temperature correction and measure temperature with ±0.5°C precision.

For production environments, speed and system integration are major strengths. Hioki states that the RM3545A offers 21 ms measurement speed and high path resistance tolerance, allowing it to be embedded into automated test systems without the same level of concern about wiring or contact resistance. The instrument also includes a LAN interface for communication with computers and PLCs, as well as comparator, contact-check, and command-monitor functions that can support easier system debugging and control.

The platform is also flexible for multi-point inspection. Hioki says the RM3545A-2 can be fitted with up to two optional Z3003 Multiplexer Units for measurement of up to 20 channels, and when combined with the SW1002 Switch Mainframe, the system can support up to 132 channels using the 4-terminal method. This makes it a strong choice for manufacturers seeking space-saving, scalable resistance measurement across multiple test points.

For manufacturers of EV components, busbars, welded assemblies, and other high-current electrical connections, the Hioki RM3545A provides a practical solution for improving inspection quality, supporting traceability, and increasing production efficiency. Its combination of low-resistance precision, temperature compensation, automation readiness, and multi-channel expandability makes it a strong fit for modern production testing and quality control.
