Advance Power Conversion Testing with the Hioki PW8001 Power Analyzer
As power electronics continue to evolve, engineers need measurement tools that can keep pace with higher switching frequencies, wider bandwidth requirements, and increasingly complex multi-channel systems. The Hioki Power Analyzer PW8001 is designed to support these demands by delivering high-precision power analysis for motor drives, inverters, renewable energy systems, and advanced power conversion applications. Hioki presents the PW8001 as a high-precision power analyzer for motor and inverter efficiency analysis, with measurement capability from DC to 5 MHz in 3-phase 4-wire systems.
One of the PW8001’s strongest advantages is measurement accuracy across a wide frequency range. Hioki specifies basic accuracy of ±0.03%, DC accuracy of ±0.05%, and 50 kHz accuracy of 0.2%, helping engineers evaluate power conversion efficiency with greater confidence across both low- and high-frequency conditions. This is especially important in applications involving modern inverter technology, wide-bandgap devices, and fast switching power systems.
The PW8001 is also built for capturing fast-changing electrical behavior. Hioki states that, with the appropriate input unit, the analyzer offers 18-bit, 15 MHz sampling performance and 110 dB CMRR at 100 kHz, supporting more accurate observation of power fluctuations caused by high-speed switching. The platform also includes Power Spectrum Analysis (PSA), using FFT-based analysis to examine voltage, current, and active power in greater detail and help identify high-frequency power losses more effectively.
Flexibility is another major strength. The PW8001 supports up to 8 power channels in a single unit and can be expanded through synchronized multi-unit configurations for larger systems. Hioki also highlights functions such as 4-motor or 2-motor simultaneous analysis, automatic phase shift correction with compatible current sensors, and CAN or CAN FD output for integration into broader test environments. In higher-voltage applications, the analyzer supports evaluation at up to 1500 V DC CAT II / 1000 V DC CAT III with the appropriate input unit.
For engineering teams working in EV development, inverter design, smart grid systems, renewable energy, and industrial power conversion, the PW8001 provides a practical platform for precise, scalable, and high-speed power analysis. Its combination of bandwidth, accuracy, synchronization, and advanced analysis functions makes it a strong solution for demanding efficiency and loss evaluation work.
