CAT + SAT: One Connection for Complete Circuit Breaker Functional Testing

Configured test connections should support more useful measurements, not more rewiring. DV Power’s CAT + SAT system combines timing, resistance and auxiliary-circuit functional tests into one circuit-breaker testing workflow.

RCCE supports Canadian utility and industrial teams evaluating DV Power circuit-breaker test workflows. The system is designed so the CAT controls the SAT through USB, while test results from the SAT are displayed on the CAT touchscreen.

Workflow benefit: The official CAT + SAT application describes multiple functional tests performed without changing the test connection during the sequence.

What the combined system covers

Test area CAT + SAT role
Timing and resistance Circuit-breaker timing, static resistance measurement (SRM) and dynamic resistance measurement (DRM), where the CAT is configured with its built-in micro-ohmmeter.
Auxiliary supply In Mode 1, SAT supplies the breaker’s auxiliary circuit for CAT-supported tests—up to 300 V DC or 250 V AC for coils and motor, according to the manufacturer.
Coil analysis In Mode 2, CAT relays connect SAT coil outputs to the trip and close coils so SAT operates as a coil analyzer.
Functional checks Minimum trip voltage, coil resistance, undervoltage coil functional tests and motor tests are included in the manufacturer’s Mode 2 workflow.

A practical field sequence

  1. Confirm the breaker nameplate data, auxiliary-circuit type and applicable site procedure.
  2. Connect SAT motor output to the motor terminals and SAT coil outputs through CAT as specified in the official wiring method.
  3. Use CAT to set rated and minimum coil supply conditions, then complete the timing and resistance work in the planned test sequence.
  4. Use the coil-analyzer mode when minimum trip voltage, coil resistance, undervoltage and motor checks are required.
Safety note: Circuit-breaker testing must be planned and performed by qualified personnel under the owner’s isolation, lockout and safety procedures. Confirm the applicable equipment configuration and test limits before work begins.
